How to Line Your Planter Box Before Planting

Getting ready to start your garden? Properly lining your raised planter box is a crucial first step that will protect your investment and help your plants thrive. Here's a quick guide to get you started.

Why Line Your Planter Box?

Lining your planter box creates a barrier between the wood and soil, preventing rot and extending the life of your planter. It also helps retain moisture and prevents soil from washing out through gaps.

What You'll Need

  • Landscape fabric or heavy-duty plastic liner
  • Scissors or utility knife
  • Staple gun (optional)

Simple Steps to Line Your Planter

1. Measure and Cut: Measure the interior of your planter box and cut your liner material, leaving a few extra inches on all sides.

2. Position the Liner: Place the liner inside your planter box, pressing it into the corners and along the sides. Make sure it covers the bottom completely.

3. Secure It: Fold the excess liner over the top edges and secure with a staple gun, or simply tuck it under the rim. Don't worry about it being perfect—it'll be hidden once you add soil.

4. Drainage Holes: If using plastic, poke several small drainage holes in the bottom to prevent waterlogging.

5. Add Soil and Plant: You're ready to fill with quality soil and start planting!
