Protect Your Outdoor Planters with Spray Polyurethane

Protect Your Outdoor Planters with Spray Polyurethane

If you've invested in beautiful cedar planter boxes for your outdoor garden, you'll want to protect them from the elements. One of the easiest and most effective ways to extend the life of your planters is with a simple spray-on oil-based polyurethane finish.

Why Use Polyurethane on Outdoor Planters?

Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, but exposure to sun, rain, and temperature changes can still take a toll over time. A protective polyurethane coating creates a barrier that:

  • Shields wood from moisture damage
  • Prevents UV fading and graying
  • Enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain
  • Extends the lifespan of your planters by years

Our Polyurethane Recommendation

A simple, easy to use rattle can of polyurethane is our best recommendation. We specifically use the spray can of Varathane's oil-based polyurethane for easy application and good coating. Cedar wood can be absortive though so multiple applications may be needed.

How to Apply Spray Polyurethane

The process is straightforward and beginner-friendly:

  1. Prep the surface: Make sure your planter is clean and completely dry. Lightly sand if needed.
  2. Choose your finish: Oil-based polyurethane in a spray can offers excellent durability and a smooth, even application.
  3. Apply thin coats: Hold the can 8-12 inches away and spray in smooth, overlapping strokes. Two to three thin coats work better than one heavy coat.
  4. Let it cure: Allow each coat to dry fully (check the can instructions) before applying the next.

Maintain Your Investment

Whether you're using our 4-foot raised planter boxes, handmade 15" cedar planters, or small cedar boxes, a quick polyurethane treatment once a year will keep them looking great season after season.
